Brihaspati: for wisdom, righteousness, expansion,
grace, and spiritual illumination
Brihaspati Stotram with Lalita Sahasanarama Yagya
Yagya Announcement: Brihaspati Stotram with Lalita Sahasanarama Yagya
Brihaspati or Guru Stotram with Lalita Sahasanarama Yagya, 11 pandits, 11 days. July 22nd to August 1st, 2026

A Bṛhaspati (Guru) Stotram is a hymn of praise that enlivens Bṛhaspati, the Vedic
deity of wisdom, sacred speech, and divine knowledge, who is also identified in Jyotish
with the planet Guru (Jupiter). The purpose of reciting or sponsoring a Guru Stotram is
to invoke the qualities that Bṛhaspati represents wisdom, righteousness, expansion,
grace, and spiritual illumination.
Traditional purposes
A Guru Stotram is commonly recited to:
- Increase wisdom, discernment, and good judgment.
- Strengthen one’s relationship with teachers, mentors, and spiritual guides.
- Remove ignorance and confusion.
- Promote success in education, study of the Vedas, and spiritual practices.
- Increase prosperity that comes through dharmic living rather than mere accumulation.
- Cultivate patience, generosity, and compassion.
- Support healthy marriages and children, since Jupiter is considered a significator of these in Jyotish.
- Enhance devotion and understanding of higher spiritual truths.
In Jyotish (Vedic Astrology)
If Jupiter is weak, afflicted, or poorly placed in a birth chart, traditional astrologers may
recommend:
- Recitation of a Guru Stotram.
- Chanting the Guru mantra.
- Worship of Bṛhaspati on Thursdays.
- Performing a Guru Yagya or Brihaspati Homa.
- Acts of charity associated with Guru, such as supporting teachers, education, or spiritual institutions. The intention is not to “change fate” outright, but to enliven the positive qualities symbolized by Guru so they become more fully expressed in one’s life.
Spiritual significance
On a deeper level, Bṛhaspati is more than the planetary influence of Jupiter. In the Vedic tradition he is regarded as:
- the priest (purohita) of the devas,
- the embodiment of divine intelligence,
- the lord of sacred speech (Vāc),
- and the revealer of Vedic knowledge.
Reciting a Guru Stotram is therefore understood as aligning the individual mind with
cosmic intelligence. The hymn cultivates clarity, sattva (purity), and receptivity to higher knowledge.
During a Yagya
When a Guru Stotram is recited by Vedic pandits as part of a yajña, the traditional
understanding is that the vibrations of the Sanskrit verses are intended to:
- enliven the field of wisdom and higher intelligence,
- strengthen benefic Jupiter influences,
- remove obstacles arising from ignorance or poor judgment,
- increase harmony in family, education, finances, and spiritual growth,
- and invoke blessings from Bṛhaspati for the yajamāna (the person on whose behalf the ritual is performed).
These Vedic sounds are often described as enlivening the organizing intelligence of
nature that Bṛhaspati represents, rather than merely offering symbolic praise. From that perspective, the stotram helps bring individual awareness into greater harmony with the intelligence governing knowledge, order, and evolution.
Overall, a Bṛhaspati or Guru Stotram is traditionally regarded as one of the principal
hymns for enhancing wisdom, spiritual understanding, righteous action (dharma), and
the benefic influences associated with Jupiter in Vedic thought.
