Here are two yagyas that run back-to-back across eleven days, both dedicated to Goddess Durga, and offered together as a single booking. The first, the Sharad Navratri Yagya, covers the nine nights of the autumn Navratri, from 11 to 19 October.

The second, the Vijay Dashmi Yagya, covers Vijayadashami, the tenth day that follows, on 20 and 21 October. Eleven pandits perform both. In the tradition the two belong together: Navratri is the nine nights of Durga’s battle against the demon Mahishasura, and Vijayadashami is the day she defeated him.

Each of the nine nights is given to one of the nine forms of Durga, known together as the Navadurga. The Navratri Yagya is performed to ask for her protection, directed at a particular concern: an obstacle in work or health, or a stretch of time that feels unsettled.

At its center is the Durga Saptashati, also called the Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, the 700 verses from the Markandeya Purana that recount Durga’s battles against the demons who overran the world, Mahishasura among them.

The pandits recite it across the nine days, with the most weight on Ashtami and Navami, the eighth and ninth nights, held to be the most potent for the Divine Mother’s worship.

Vijayadashami is the day the battle is won. In the tradition of Lord Rama the same day marks his victory over Ravana, so both strands carry one meaning: what has resisted is finally broken. It is the traditional day to begin something, a venture or a resolve that has waited for the right moment, because the obstacle is now counted as broken rather than merely held back.

The Vijay Dashmi Yagya centers on the Aparajita Puja, the worship of Devi Aparajita, the undefeated, a form of Durga invoked for a victory that holds. The pandits chant the Aparajita Stotra, drawing again on the Durga Saptashati whose story the day completes.

Booked together, the eleven days run the full arc rather than a part of it, from the nine nights of invocation and battle to the day of the victory itself. Traditionally, the Navratri portion is turned to for clearing obstacles and the strength to face what is hard, the Vijay Dashmi portion for success in a specific contest, a case, a negotiation, or a long problem that needs to end, and the blessings of both for the yajamana’s family as much as the yajamana.

The sequence is set to close on Vijayadashami, so the performance moves from invocation to its result.
