Yagya Announcement: Durga Navratri

The Durga Navratri Yagya is a Vedic yagya dedicated to Goddess Durga, the form of the Divine Mother who removes obstacles and protects against adversity. Twenty-one pandits will perform it over 21 days, from 11 to 31 October, 2026. Its grounding is the Devi Mahatmya of the Markandeya Purana, which recounts Durga’s defeat of the demon Mahishasura after the gods had failed to overcome him.

The yagya is performed to ask Durga for protection. Yajamanas join it when facing opposition, a run of setbacks, or a period of instability, and when they need courage for a decision or a new undertaking. Many take it up each year at Navratri with no particular trouble in view, as a standing practice of devotion to the Divine Mother.

At the center of the yagya is the Durga Saptashati, also called the Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path. It is a text of 700 verses in 13 chapters, forming chapters 81 to 93 of the Markandeya Purana. It describes three battles in which Durga defeats forces that threaten the order of the world, and it closes with her promise to return whenever she is called on in distress. The pandits recite it across the full 21 days, traditionally to invoke that promise of protection for the yajamana.

Traditionally, the yagya is associated with protection from enemies and danger, the removal of obstacles in work and family life, and a return to stability after a hard period. On the spiritual side, it is held to strengthen devotion to the Divine Mother and to build the courage to act rightly. The benefit is understood to extend to the yajamana’s family. The Devi Mahatmya itself states that those who hear or recite it are freed from calamity.

The timing follows Sharad Navratri, the autumn Navratri, which begins on 11 October this year and closes with Vijayadashami on 20 October. The yagya opens on the first day of the festival and continues eleven days beyond it. A yagya’s strength is measured by the number of mantra repetitions, and the longer performance allows far more of them than a nine-day observance.
